What we do with your information

Federal law requires every financial institution to tell you how it collects, shares, and protects your personal information. This is Summit's notice, in plain English.

The short version

Summit Federal Credit Union collects personal information to run your accounts, meet legal obligations, and protect you from fraud. We do not sell your information to anyone, ever, and we do not share it with outside companies so they can market their products to you. The rest of this page explains the detail behind those sentences.

This notice applies to all Summit consumer members and to former members. It was last revised in July 2026 and replaces any earlier version.

Why we collect information

Financial institutions choose how they share your personal information. Federal law gives you the right to limit some but not all sharing. It also requires us to tell you how we collect, share, and protect that information. Read this notice carefully to understand what we do.

The types of information we collect and share depend on the products and services you have with us. That can include your Social Security number and income, account balances and transaction history, credit history and credit scores, employment information, and payment history. When you are no longer a member, we continue to handle your information as described here.

How we collect it

We collect your personal information directly from you when you open an account or apply for a loan, provide employment or income information, use your debit or credit card, deposit money, or pay us by check. We also collect it when you sign in to digital banking, visit a branch, or call the Member Service Center.

We also collect information about you from others, including credit bureaus, other financial institutions, the affiliates and service providers we work with, and public records such as property and lien filings. On our website we collect limited technical information, including device type, browser, and pages viewed, which helps us keep the site working and detect fraudulent sign-in attempts.

Why we can share it

All financial companies need to share some personal information to run their everyday business. In the section below we list the reasons we can share and whether you can limit that sharing. Where a reason is marked as one you can limit, the "Limiting what we share" section tells you how.

Reasons we can share your information

This is the federal model disclosure table, adapted for Summit. "No" in the third column means there is nothing for you to limit, because we do not do it.

Reason we can share Does Summit share? Can you limit it?
For our everyday business purposes, such as processing transactions, maintaining your account, responding to court orders, or reporting to credit bureaus Yes No
For our own marketing, to offer you Summit products and services Yes Yes
For joint marketing with other financial companies, such as our insurance and investment partners Yes Yes
For our affiliates' everyday business purposes, limited to transaction and experience information Yes No
For our affiliates' everyday business purposes, involving creditworthiness information No Not applicable
For our affiliates to market to you No Not applicable
For non-affiliates to market to you No Not applicable
Sale of member information to data brokers or advertisers No Not applicable

Limiting what we share

You can tell us not to use your information for Summit marketing and not to share it for joint marketing with other financial companies. Choose whichever method is easiest: change your preferences under Privacy Settings in digital banking, call 1-800-555-0148, ask at any of our 42 branches, or write to the address at the bottom of this page.

If you are a new member, we may use and share your information as described here for 30 days from the date we sent this notice. After that period, we will honor your choice. Your election stays in effect until you change it, and there is no need to renew it each year.

If you hold an account jointly, any account holder may make a privacy election, and we will apply it to everyone on the account. If you would rather each owner choose separately, tell us and we will note that on the account.

How we protect your information

To protect your personal information from unauthorized access and use, we use security measures that comply with federal law. These include encryption of data in transit and at rest, multi-factor authentication on digital banking, continuous fraud monitoring, physical safeguards at our branches and data centers, and access controls that limit member data to employees who need it to do their jobs.

Every Summit employee and contractor completes annual privacy and information security training. Service providers who handle member data are contractually required to protect it to the same standard we do and may not use it for any purpose other than the service they perform for us.

Your rights under other laws

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act you may direct us not to share creditworthiness information with our affiliates for their marketing. Summit does not share that information with affiliates for marketing at all, so no action is needed on your part.

If you live in a state with additional financial privacy protections, including California, Vermont, Nevada, or North Dakota, we apply those stricter rules to your account automatically. Residents of those states may also request a copy of the personal information we hold and ask us to correct anything inaccurate.

Definitions

Affiliates are companies related by common ownership or control. Summit's affiliates include Summit Financial Services, our investment and insurance subsidiary, and Summit Title Agency.

Non-affiliates are companies not related by common ownership or control. Summit does not share your personal information with non-affiliates so they can market to you.

Joint marketing is a formal agreement between non-affiliated financial companies that together market financial products or services to you. Our joint marketing partners include insurance carriers and certificate issuers.

Common questions

Does Summit sell my data?

No. Summit has never sold member information and does not accept payment from advertisers or data brokers for access to it. As a member-owned cooperative, we have no shareholder pressure to monetize your account activity.

Will limiting sharing change my accounts?

Not at all. Your rates, fees, and services stay exactly the same. You will simply see fewer offers from us and from our joint marketing partners.

How often will I receive this notice?

We send it when you join and once a year afterward as long as our practices have not changed. If we ever change how we share information, we will notify you before it takes effect.

What happens to my information if I close my accounts?

We keep records as long as federal law requires, generally five to seven years, and continue to protect them under this notice. We do not begin sharing former members' information for any new purpose.

Does the website track me?

We use cookies to keep you signed in, remember your preferences, and measure site performance. We do not place third-party advertising trackers on pages behind the digital banking sign-in.

How do I report a suspected privacy breach?

Call 1-800-555-0148 immediately or email the Privacy Office. We investigate every report and, if member data was exposed, notify affected members and regulators as the law requires.

Set your privacy choices

Update your sharing preferences in digital banking under Privacy Settings, or call and we will take care of it while you are on the line.
