Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers, no fine print

The questions our member service team hears most, answered the way they would answer them on the phone. If yours is not here, call 800-555-0100 and ask.

Roughly eighty percent of the questions we get fall into one of these five areas.

Who can join, what it costs, what being an owner actually means, and how long opening an account takes.

Membership

Summit has been member-owned since 1948 and now serves 412,000 members with $14.2 billion in assets.

Who is eligible to join?

Anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in our service area, plus their immediate family. Membership in one of several partner community organizations also qualifies, and joining one costs a few dollars.

What does it cost to become a member?

Five dollars, deposited into a share savings account that stays yours. That deposit is your ownership stake; there is no separate membership fee.

What does being an owner actually get me?

A vote in board elections regardless of your balance, and a claim on the surplus. Because there are no outside shareholders, earnings come back as better rates and fewer fees.

How long does opening an account take?

About five minutes online if you have your Social Security number and a government-issued ID handy. In a branch, budget twenty minutes including funding the account.

Can I still join if my credit is poor?

Yes. Membership is not credit-based. A prior charged-off account at a financial institution is the only common obstacle, and even then we will usually talk through a path forward.

What if I move out of the area?

Once a member, always a member. Your accounts continue, and 85,000 surcharge-free ATMs plus 5,600 shared branches mean access rarely becomes an issue.

Accounts and online banking

Everyday accounts

Is there a monthly fee on checking?

No. Free Checking has no monthly fee and no minimum balance, and the fee is not waived conditionally. It is simply not charged.

When are my deposits available?

The first $225 of a check deposit is available the next business day, with the remainder typically on the second. Direct deposits post as soon as the payer's file arrives, often two days early.

What happens if I overdraw?

Transactions under $10 are covered at no charge. Above that, the overdraft fee is $25, capped at two per day, and we do not charge a sustained overdraft fee.

How is the savings rate set?

The board reviews rates monthly against market conditions. High-yield savings currently pays 4.15% APY with no minimum balance and no tiering.

Can I have more than one savings account?

Yes, up to twelve, and you can name each one. Members commonly split savings by purpose: emergency fund, taxes, a vehicle, a trip.

Online banking and the app

I am locked out. How do I get back in?

Use "Forgot password" on the sign-in screen; it verifies you with a one-time code and lets you reset immediately. If that fails, call 800-555-0155.

What are the mobile deposit limits?

$5,000 per day and $15,000 per rolling thirty days for established accounts. Limits are lower for the first ninety days, and you can see yours on the deposit screen.

Can I connect budgeting apps or a brokerage?

Yes. We support secure token-based connections, so third-party apps never see or store your Summit password. You can revoke any connection from Settings.

Why do I get asked for a code so often?

Two-factor triggers on new devices, new browsers, and unusual locations. Marking a device as trusted reduces prompts on that device without weakening the account.

Is there a fee for bill pay or transfers?

No. Bill pay, internal transfers, and standard ACH transfers to outside banks are free. Only wires and expedited same-day payments carry a fee.

Cards and lending

Debit and credit cards

Do I need to tell you before I travel?

It helps but is no longer required. Our fraud models account for travel patterns, and a travel notice in the app takes a few seconds if you want the extra assurance.

How fast can I get a replacement card?

Standard replacements arrive in five to seven business days at no cost. Expedited delivery is $25, and any branch can print a working card while you wait.

Is there a foreign transaction fee?

Summit credit cards charge none. Debit card purchases abroad carry a 1% network fee, which is passed through without a markup from us.

How do I dispute a charge?

Open the transaction in the app and choose Dispute, or call 800-555-0142. Provisional credit is typically posted within one business day while we investigate.

Does freezing a card cancel it?

No. A freeze is reversible in one tap and leaves your card number intact. Recurring payments you previously authorized continue to run.

Loans and credit

Can I check my rate without hurting my credit?

Yes. Prequalification uses a soft inquiry that is invisible to other lenders. Only a formal application creates a hard inquiry.

How long does a loan decision take?

Most auto and personal loan applications are decided in under an hour during business hours. Mortgage preapproval typically takes one to two business days.

What rates are you offering right now?

New auto starts at 4.09% APR, 30-year fixed mortgages at 6.375% APR, home equity lines at 6.625% APR, and personal loans from 8.99% APR.

Is there a prepayment penalty?

Not on any Summit consumer loan or mortgage. Pay extra or pay it off entirely whenever you like, and interest simply stops accruing.

What if I cannot make a payment?

Call 800-555-0163 before the due date. Options include skip-a-payment, a due date change, or a short-term modification, and calling early keeps far more of them open.

Rates current as of July 2026 and subject to change. Membership eligibility required. This is a demonstration website; rates, products, and figures shown are illustrative only.
