Higher yields as your balance grows

Tiered rates that start at $2,500 and step up at $25,000 and $100,000, with limited check writing when you need to reach the money directly.

Where a money market fits

For balances too large to leave idle and too near-term to lock into a certificate.

Three rate tiers

3.60% APY from $2,500, 4.05% APY at $25,000, and 4.40% APY once you cross $100,000.

Limited check writing

Six checks or outbound transfers per statement cycle, which covers a contractor payment or a tuition bill.

No lock-up period

Unlike a certificate, there is no term and no early withdrawal penalty. The balance stays yours to move.

No monthly fee

The account carries no service charge at any balance, including if you temporarily fall below $2,500.

NCUA insured

Insured to at least $250,000 per depositor. This is a deposit account, not a money market mutual fund.

Free internal transfers

Move money to and from Summit checking instantly at no charge, and those transfers do not count as withdrawals.

Choosing between savings, money market, and certificates

A simple way to place each dollar according to when you will need it.

1

Money you may need this month

Keep it in High-Yield Savings at 4.15% APY. No minimum, unlimited withdrawals, and instant transfers to checking.

2

Money set aside for the next year or two

A Money Market account earns more as the balance climbs and still lets you write a check when a large bill arrives.

3

Money you can commit to a date

Share Certificates pay the most, up to 4.65% APY, in exchange for leaving the balance untouched for a fixed term.

Common questions

Is this a money market mutual fund?

No. It is an insured deposit account at the credit union. The principal does not fluctuate and NCUA insurance covers at least $250,000 per depositor.

What happens if I drop below $2,500?

The account stays open with no fee, and the balance earns the base rate of 0.75% APY until it climbs back above the tier minimum. Nothing is closed or penalized.

What counts against the six-item limit?

Checks, outbound ACH transfers, and wires. Transfers you make between your own Summit accounts, ATM withdrawals, and branch withdrawals do not count.

Does the top tier rate apply to my whole balance?

Yes. Unlike blended checking tiers, the money market rate is applied to the full balance based on the tier you land in for that statement period.

Can I get a debit card for this account?

A money market account does not carry a debit card. Link it to your Summit checking for card access, and use checks or transfers for larger payments.

Should I ladder certificates instead?

Many members do both, keeping a money market as the liquid layer and laddering certificates underneath. An advisor will map both against your timeline at no charge.

Move your balance to a better tier

Open a Money Market account online, or ask an advisor to compare it against a certificate ladder first.
